After an insanely chaotic 2020, you might be breathing a sigh of relief that it is 2021. Granted, the world is still tumbling through Covid, and a return to normalcy (real normalcy!) doesn’t look likely till the middle of 2021. But that doesn’t mean you need to put everything on hold, and now is probably a great time to think about starting a new skill. Music lessons come to mind! And here are a few reasons why starting music lessons in 2021 is a great idea:
1) It doesn’t matter where you live!
Now that so many things have gone remote, it literally doesn’t matter where you live, you can take lessons from virtually (no pun intended) any teacher you want! And don’t worry about technical limitations. At this point, teachers have been working remotely for long enough to figure out any hiccups that may come up.
2) Taking Lessons give you manageable goals
Music lessons are great in that they have a weekly rhythm to keep you on track, and it only takes a commitment of a few minutes a day to see results. Jeffrey Steele, the author of “Stick With It,” talks about taking a step-wise approach to achieving goals versus setting up large goals, and not knowing how to achieve them. For example, your goal may be to become proficient on the piano in a year. But how do you get there? By setting up daily steps in the form of regular practice, that will help you eventually achieve your goal.
3) Music is fun! And we need more fun in our lives
Put simply, playing music is really fun. Even if you aren’t the next Mozart or Schumann, or even Billy Joel. Playing music is very good for your cognitive and motor abilities, and is beneficial emotionally. At this point in 2021, we could all use a bit of an emotional boost and perhaps an escape from the complexities of the world. And what better way to achieve these things than by committing to music lessons and practicing just a few minutes a day.
